fuel pump question, please help!
fuel pump question, please help!
My car is stuck at master muffler, I drove it down there on saturday but it won't start again. When I turn the key it doesn't do anything. I think this is probably because of a weak battery, but the real problem is the fuel pump. It's not getting any fuel and there is about 3/4 tank left. The car will crank when I touch the terminals on the starter with a screwdriver, and it started when I was doing that and sparying starting fluid into the throttle body. but when I stopped spraying it died. I knew the fule pump is bad, but I was just wondering if there was a way I could get it running long enough for me to get it home so that it is out of the parking lot there. Is there a way I can get fuel to start flowing? Is there any temperary fix so I can at least get it home to work on?
i'm not sure what vehicle you have, but i have a '88 TA 305 TPI and recently had the fuel pump die. Actually, the fuel pump would work off and on. Seems that it would work for a while after the pump cooled off (several hours). But if i shut the vehicle off, the fuel pump was dead for the next few hours.
My friend and i replaced it (not real difficult, but time consuming).
When you turn the key to "run" (just before you turn it to "crank") you should hear the fuel pump run for a second or so, then it'll shut off.
If you're not hearing that, then yes, you have a problem with the fuel pump or circuit.

You'll need to buy/rent/borrow a fuel pressure gauge. And I do stress "NEED". I bought mine for $40 from Pep Boys, made by Sunpro. If you have low pressure, and the electrical circuits are fine, you're not getting the car out of there unless you tow it. But not many people want to buy a fuel pressure gauge; not sure why. There's no way around it, you need one.
