Spark plug: R42CTS vs R42TS - What's the "C" for?

So, what's the C for? My owners manual from '86 says "R42CTS". Now, seems like that plug # is outdated, and the plugs are labeled "R42TS". Was the "C" for copper? If it was, why isn't it part of the plug number anymore?
