two pulse vss == manual or electric speedo? (aka, vader, help)

Ok. From what I've read, the VSS being out can cause some of the problems I've had, and since I'm throwing a code 24, I'm gonna replace it. Now, the question is... On an 87 Firebird Formula (305 TPI) I have a two-pulse VSS (http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Spe...eedometer.html)... Does that mean it is mounted on the speedometer, or on the tranny? (Manual tranny). Or, is it's location totally unrelated to its type? What is the part number for the correct vss/cable that I need?

Thanks, all, for any help!

It is mounted to the back of the instrument cluster and points at the speedo head. Don't know on the P/N, can get the P/N on an '85 unit if you want.

From the link you provided.

1. The two-pulse (2000 pulses per mile) square wave (D.C. current or direct current) used on all TBI engines through 1992, all computer-controlled-carbureted engines, and on 1985–1989 TPI engines.

Well wouldn't you know it, I have an extra one in the garage but there isn't a P/N on it.

Also this was for a camaro, don't know if the bird is the same.

So it is a mechanical speedometer, with the VSS mounted to the guage. Guess I'll replace the speedometer cable first tranny to cruise control thing, then try the vss.

Actually on the bird, it should be a electronic speedo, at least it is on the t/a's from late 86 and up. It didnt change for the camaro until 90. Your vss should be in the tranny.
