Does this sound like trans or rear end?

When I take off even slightly hard from a stop, the car hesitates and makes a thump sound before it goes anywhere. And if I floor it once I'm already moving, it shifts harder than normal. This just started about a month ago out of nowhere. I'm wondering if its the trans or if there is some sort of slack in the rear end. I don't think its a trans mount, but I'm not entirely sure.

The "thump" sounds like a rear going to me. Just happened to my friend's stang. Me and him were racing from a stop and as soon as his tires caught BAM. Oil all over the place and 3 holes in the cover. But I don't see how a rear would make it hard to shift.

Yes a rear end can make it hard to shift, mine did that before it went.

Start with the cheap, easy, and obvious things, in that order. Those 3 things would be trans mount, trans mount, and trans mount. If you haven't changed it lately, then it's broken, like every other one of these cars. Get an Energy Suspension one and you'll never have to worry about it again.

Well, today and LottaBalls drove the IROC. At one point, I floored it and when it shifted, LottaBalls had his arm on the console and could feel the trans moving underneath there. So when we got home, we jacked up the trans, and there is about 2" of movement. Hahaha! Yall were very right about the trans mount. I ordered the Energy Suspension one from Summit today.

I'm all for the thump=trans mount, but what about the hesitation? Didn't think a trans mount could cause that either...

That's a good point. I don't know what is causing that hesitation.

Trans. Mount

Hey everyone,

Any special instructions one would need before trying to change the transmission mount. LottaBalls said they jacked there transmission up, I heard that was not a good idea.??

Thanks for any help/suggestions

Brett

hesitation

If you havent had the tranny serviced in a while the hesitation could be coming from a clogged filter or low fluid level.

You can jack it up as long as you don't use the pan to do it with and you don't move it more than a couple inches.

And if that doesn't fix it, maybe you should look at the trans mount.

You might also want to take a close look at the torque arm mountings while you're under there. Since the torque arm has probably been taking all the beating since the rear trans cradle mount failed, it has likely moved or at least loosened at its front end. Don't overlook the driveline angle adjustment bolts at the other (rear) end of the torque arm.

Okay, we got the trans mount in the mail today, and LottaBalls put it on. We drove it, and it is unbelievably better! The thumping and the hard-shifts are gone! Thank you! Also, when we took the old trans mount off, we noticed that it was actually broken in two. The oil pressure sending unit had been leaking a few months ago, and we put a new one in back then, but the oil covered the trans mount and probably made it soft and that's why it broke.

my car shifts pretty damn hard......the shift kit makes it that i can break the tires loose hitting second and third.......its hell on the mount....although i still use the stock rubber p.o.s.

lifetime gauruntee at autozone.......

i was going to put a poly or solid one in but then i d be afraid of what all that stress would attack next.......the crossmember or the tranny or something and its not thta hard to change the mount so i stick with the rubber one

did anyone think maybe there engine mounts are trashed, and are putting more stress on the trans mount?,

i broke 2 or 3 trans mounts with my STOCK 2.8L, with a slipping when it shifted trans, since the v8 swap i broke one, and it was the last one that i had with the 2.8l, 18 months later still solid, and is gonna get bolted to my t5 if it fits.
