Fuel pump woes!!We need help!!!!

Need help on this one. A club member has been running this setup with no problems until now. The car will run for about 5 minutes and when he starts to get on it the fuel pump over heats and shuts down. When it cools off; it will start again-then same problem again.
CAR SPECS: 355c. totally done-approx. 460 hp--holley electric fuel pump located at back and out of the way of any heat--holley carb--double fuel filter setup.
CURES TRIED: replaced it with 3 fuel pumps--replcaced both fuel filters--drop tank and was clean--blew out lines to tank;fuel line to carb and clean--changed fuel regulator valve--tried to run direct line from battery to fuel pump with toggle switch and no change--floats are in correct spot as before.
QURPS NOTICED: took old fuel pump and hooked it up to a battery and pumped water thru it as a test and after one hour still ran fine--fuel pressure before run-7 psi and after stoppage only 4-1/2 psi--pulled vaccum line off fuel canister and car ran about 15 minutes before dying.
THIS ONE IS DRIVING US NUTS!!!! ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

do you have a fuel pressure regulator with a return line to the tank? If not it would cause the pump to overheat and stop working. I had this problem when I switched from a fuel injected system to a carbed system with the same fuel pump and an inline style(no return line) fuel pressure regulator. I quickly purchased a nice new malory 3 port adjustable FPR and it fixed the problem to this day.

I hope this helps,

Ben
