I WANT an error code
I WANT an error code
I know this might sound crazy, but I'm still fighting this problem on my 92 Camaro 3.1L V6 where it just looses power above ~ 3000 rpm (in nuetral). At this point I have to change something, after troubleshooting damn near everything & completely changing all componets in the distributor. I'm torn between the CAT & the ECM. The reason for my post is that this thing never throws a trouble code. So, as maybe a last step, I'm wondering what senor could I disconnect to see if the ECM is capable of detecting a trouble code. This might sway me away from the CAT. I'm really at my wits end here, but I hate just throwing parts at a car to fix a problem. BTW, the only reason I changed everything in the distributor was a trusted mechanic buddy of mine convinced me that at 110K miles this would be considered maintainence items.
Yeah...make sure the tune up is good. This is what I get for letting a teenager take care of a car. I forced a code by disconnecting the MAP. ECM set a trouble code. The night before I read the manual for the GM Tech 1 scan tool. I was reading all my sensor data while in the field service mode, which was a huge mistake, because it causes the CAT to overheat. I realized I needed to use the data list mode. So, I disconneted both battery cables & touched them together to discharge the capacitors in the ECM. I restarted the engine & put the scan tool in the data list mode. Engine still experience the no power problem, but only once. Then I changed the air cleaner & all the spark plugs. Ergo, make sure the tune up is good. I'm still not convinced the problem is solved totally, but there is a dramatic inprovement, meaning the engine will accellerate to any rpm in neutral without dieing out. While driving, the engine will pull to 5000 rpm, with the exception of a hick up early on, after starting the engine. I suspect what is happening is that the ECM is relearning its tables, now that basic engine performance was improved with the new plugs & air cleaner. I'm going to keep road testing to see if the problem totally clears up. I think the ECM has to see a number of start/stop cycles (drive cycles) before it really settles down. I'm still running without the exhaust system until I'm convinced I don't need to change the CAT or the fuel pump. I'm probably really pissing off the neighbors. A V6 w/o a muffler sounds like a sick ***** burner.
