Removal of steering wheel

I need to replace some parts in my 89 GTA Convertible steering column and replace black plastic housing due to close car theft. Caught them in the act. Now I have to fix the damage..How does the steering wheel come off.It has radio contols on it.

The cover with the controls pops off, just pull on it. Behind that is the nut, take that off and then you'll need a puller or similar device (homemade can work) to get the wheel off. Then you have to deal with the factory lockplate, for that I would recommend the tool they make for it. Its no fun otherwise. Then you have the turn signal switch, lock cylinder, and all that other fun stuff you have to get out of the way. The turn signal stalk apparently comes off easy, but I've never taken one off before. The tilt lever unscrews. Get all that out of the way, you should be able to replace the collar and reassemble.

it might be easier to swap in a new column instead of fixing it. only a couple of bolts and harnesses to unplug.
