i have an 88 t/a and it smell like gas too. they usually do that right after you fill up the tank allthe way, i also got a new gas cap and it seems to help(except when the pump spits some out after ive removed it
)
) Charcoal canister, leaky injectors/fuel rail, and bad fuel pressure regulator can all make the interior smell like fuel. As for the gas tank filler neck, the easiest way to make sure you have a good seal is to listen for the hissing sound when you remove your gas cap. Of course, this only works after driving around for awhile... - John '89 L98
Welcome Aboard!
You're not as fortunate with the newer F-cars. After 1987, the EVAP canister is no longer serviceable. The earlier cars have a filter pad in the base that reqires replacement every 30,000 miles:

Newer examples are not filtered and are trashed if they become clogged. Just to make sure, check the vacuum hose condition and routing for the EVAP canister. Check all the other items listed and you should get a little closer to the source.
