How to pass emissions (HC)
Does anybody have an great ideas for passing emissions?? I failed HC. I have just done a bunch of work, injectors, plugs, wires, rotor, cap, fuel filter. What now?? I have a hypertech chip and a low temp thermostat and it has passed with this before, though it has been tough. Usually a tune up did it. The car was warm for the test, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Ideas??

I retarded my timing alot and lowered my fuel pressure. I also unhooked the vaccum hose going to the canister at the front driver side corner of the engine bay, and took my air cleaner off. Using amoco ultimate fuel I passed, after failing earlier that day.

The car is a 90 IROC with 157,000 miles. The cat is probably 6 years old, I remember having it changed but it has been a real long time. I failed with a 1.25 (0.8 standard). I thought about the air filter becuase I have a K&N and I haven't cleaned it and it has about 40K on it. What do the vacuum lines "going to the front driver side of the engine" do??? I have never played with the timing before, I am not to sure about doing that.

Timing won't help. Leave it alone. The vacuum lines probably won't either, they go to the charcoal canister and purge the accumulated gas vapors from it for a few minutes at startup. The air filter would have to be REALLY groaty to make that kind of difference, like so dirty the motor wouldn't even rev past 3k. But of course, if it has been that long since you cleaned it, clean it, it needs it.
Sounds like you should put in a new O2 sensor and a new high-flow cat.
You could fool around with stuff and maybe rig the car somehow and possibly get it to pass; but if your car needs work, just fix it.

I know what you mean, fix it right the first time. Its just that I just dumped 800 bucks into this summer and it goes back into storage in 4 weeks, so more money makes my wallet hurt.
My O2 sensor is only a year old or so, but I am going to have a friend hook it up to his oscilliscope and see how it is working and if the engine is misfiring.
