Mech fuel pump bolt broke (how do I remove it)

One of the lower bolts that goes in the plate under the fuel pump is broke off in my block. It is pretty small. I was wondering how I would go about removing this. It broke off when my cousin was putting it in so it is not siezed. I have heard of screw extractors and such, but how small do they make, and where would I get one. Thanks for the help.

I assume the engine is in the car.

You might try taking off the fuel pump and plate. There may be enough bolt sticking out of the block to grab ahold of with small vicegrips. Very same thing happened to me about 30 years ago (I was tightening it with a speed wrench), and that was the case.

If the engine is still in the car, you aren't going to have much room to drill and use an easy-out. They do make them small enough, but you're talking about precision drilling here. If you can't get a grip on it, try backing it out with a small tip chisel first (just use the corner of the chisel to grab the edge of the shank and walk it around & out). If that fails, try getting a set of reverse-twist drill bits, which will turn the broken screw in the removal direction, not the inserting direction like normal drill bits. If it doesn't come out that way (which it probably will), then use the easy out in the newly drilled hole.

If you're still using the mechanical fuel pump, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Those bolts do absolutely nothing once the fuel pump is there. They are there for mfg convenience only during the factory engine assmebly procedure: they hold the plate on, and therefore the rod in, before the pump is put on.

They are ¼"-20. The 2 fuel pump bolts less than 2" away are 3/8"-16.

The motor is out, and yes I will be using a mech fuel pump. Are you sure it wont leak or anything without that bolt. Where would I get an "easy out" if I need one. Thanks for the help. Oh, and by the way it is broke off to far back to get a hold of.

Yeah, pretty sure... I've seen lots of them that way over the years... some with no bolts at all. There's no pressurized fluids there or anything like that. It's part of the crankcase, not 1½" from the oil pan bolts; if the oil pan bolts will hold a piece of much thinner sheet metal when placed farther than these are, then these will hold too.

Obviously if you can fix it you should; but as far as a cost-benefit ratio type of thing to concentrate on, it's not real high on the list.

Probably the easiest way to get it out would be a left-hand drill bit, maybe about 1/8" or slightly larger. see www.mcmaster.com for some of those.

I think I am going to put it together the way it is then and hope for the best, because I am wanting to drop the motor in this weekend and start getting everthing else hooked up and put back together so I can maybe drive the car after almost a year now. After I get the motor in I still have to put the boost valves in the tranny and put it in, finnish wiring up my electric speedo convversion, and put my new gta interior and alum drive shaft in. During the time its been down I also upgraded the rear brakes to the pbr setup and put a 3.45 9 bolt in. Oh, yeah. I also still have to see if I can get the brake lines from earls to work because they sent me the wrong ones for the front, and I didnt know it until after I sold the rears to someone else because I already had braided rear. Anyway, I hope to get the motor in the car soon. Should be like a whole new car.
