What causes popping out the exhaust? I notice it on the 00 TA stick shift.
It only happens while it's still cold and in between shifts.

 

Depends, could be normal sometimes, some with flowmasters say they get a bit of a small backfire sound when lettin off the gas. Can come from a lack of backpressure.

I've had it happen on me when I had 2 plug wires crossed.

 

I get the same thing on my '85 Z with a stick. Just when it is cold. It happens when you let off the gas. I have learned to let off the gas a little slower until it warms up. I believe that popping comes from a rich condition. Unburned fuel making it to the exhaust system. The car is running rich when it is heating up and that is magnified when the throttle blades slam shut as you lift off the gas to shift.

If anyone know anything else or a way to stop it, I'd love to hear it. I'm sure my neighbors love it as I drive to work at 7:00 am.

 

Does the car have a cat. on it? If not adding one will help the popping. If it has a carb, clean the throttle blades and make sure they close as far as they can and make sure it's not running rich. If all else fails and you really can't stand the popping back my local muffler guy says that he fixes that problem by adding a short glasspack before the rear muffler, but I don't think I would go that route.

i was told a leaky injector could also be the cause of the popping, perhaps that is what could be creating the rich condition.

 

I fail to understand why people are concerned about this.... it is totally normal. A cold engine especially is prone to it. It is caused by unburned fuel passing through the motor and igniting in the exhaust. Cold engines do it more because the mixture is deliberately richend while the engine is cold, to help it run until it warms up, so by definition there's extra fuel. Of course there has to be oxygen too, so if there's an exhaust leak, or air injection as our cars all came with, or if any cylinders happen to misfire under those conditions, then you have all 3 ingredients: fuel, air, & a source of ignition (from cylinders that do fire). All cars do it, it's just easier to notice on some than on others.

 

I'm not worried about it or saying it's a problem. I was just wondering what caused it. I actually like it.

well ever since i cracked my exhaust at the y pipe, it actually sound mean when i let off, of the gas, does anyone have an aftermarket exhaust that sounds this mean and who makes it? a nice mellow rolling backfire, not gun shots and explosive know what i mean? thanks.
