Cost of EGR
EGR valve and gasket for our cars is ~30$ tops. I cant remember off the top of my head. Real easy to fix tho. Only two bolts that are on studs behind the TBI or carb. Very simple. dont try it when the engine is hot tho.
Joe,
What engine do you have? The TPI engines require a negative backpressure EGR valve, and the system is so sensitive to pressure differential that I would be very leery of anything but an OEM (AC) EGR valve. In TBI applications, I've had success with the aftermarket valves with the staked-in orifice washers, and those can be purchased for $30-40. Add to that the cost of a gasaket, a can of carburetor cleaner and a small, stiff brush (to clean the passages), and a jar of Never-Seez (to coat the mounting bolts) and you might be pushing fifty bucks. On the brighter side, with a working EGR you should be able to run a little more timing advance and save enough fuel to pay for the valve in short order. 94 octane is about $1.72 around here right now.
