tap an 84 vett thermostat?

A buddy of mine has an 84 vett. He was taking the thermostat off and broke the bolt. He tried to put an easy out in to take the broken bolt out of the hole, the easy out broke Now what should he do? I'm going to help him later this week? Any Ideas how to get the darn thing out? The easy out was off center and he finally got a hole started next to where the easy out was, but drilling the hole is cuttin into the easy out. Should he get a hardned drill bit such as a carbide bit, drill the center, then get another easy out or WHAT? never been here with a broken bolt!

I know people who have been down that road.

Theres a local guy here that has a laser to take care of those things. Saving threads is still a PITA. Chances are, it'll need to be Heli-coiled or other brand of thread repair.

I discovered that the stock intake on my IROC had been victim to the same problem. One of the thermostat housing bolts had broken off in the intake. (I discovered this after I broke the other one off). Rather than drill it out and re-tap it like I did to the one I broke, the previous jimoke decided to grind it flat and drill a new hole right next to it and tap that one. Surprisingly, it actually worked. I'd consider this a last resort, but it is an option if you can't get the original hole restored. The housing never leaked, and I never had any adverse cooling issues.
