Last weekend I put a set of Edelbrock headers on my Z and it sound s and runs great except for a problem that got bigger just a few minutes ago. Ever since we put them on my car has been idleing fast and we adjusted it. Monday on my way to work the throttle got stuck on the highway and when I let off the gas it jumped up 500 rpm and steadily increased, when I would step on the gas it would slow down the rpm and I finally put it in nuetral and reved it and then it went down back to normal. Then again tonight at about 35-40mph the throttle stuck again, this time it had negative side affects. When it stuck I was going around a corner and I had no time to put the car in nuetral , so the car sped up to almost 50 and caused me to lose control of the car and point me to the street sign in front of some trees. I was able to correct but not enough and ended up slamming into the ditch at around 40-45 mph. When the car came to a stop I had my foot on the brake(still in drive too) and the tach was reading 3000 rpm! It was a grassy ditch so I was lucky in a sense. However upon closer examination I realised that I cracked front clip right under the license plate area Has anyone had a similar problem or knows what to do because I kinda like being alive.


I also need the front GFX for a 89 IROC-Z, just got a new front clip a few weeks ago and it has no GFX I also need the air dam that goes behind it.

Sucks to hear that man. Let me ask you a question. When the throttle gets stuck, does the pedal come back up, but for some reason it is still revving up, or does the pedal not come back up? This happened to my car just yesterday, and it pissed me off real bad. I got on it alittle bit, then backed off, I was on a corner, and it started going, so I put it in nuetral, then it revved to like 5 grand, so I killed the engine (on a turn mind you0 and coasted into a gas station. The problem? The little plastic interior peice underneath the steering wheel, has a little 90 part on it, and the throttle pedal was getting stuck on it, after I would get on it a litttle. Hope this solves your problem, if not, then I guess I would pop the hood, start the engine, and rev it up a couple of time from under the hood, to see if anything is catching for some odd reason. Did you remove your carb when you put the headers on? If so make sure you did not over torque the carb when you put it on. This can warp the body and cause the blades to stick. Also make sure the cable isn't binding. Remove the throttle cable and work the linkage a few times and make sure its nice and smooth, then push and pull on the cable a few times. Good luck! Be very careful until you get it fixed.

Glad to have you with us. We already have far too many past members on the "Memorial" board (NOT funny). You definitely need to get that situation addressed before driving it again.

Is the heat from the headers melting your throttle cable jacket?

Did you route the cable differently to clear the headers?

With the cable off the carb linkage, does the throttle belcrank return positively?

 

Do you have a return spring?

 

I've had a similiar experience with a quadrajet on my 89 iroc. scared the **** outta me. THe carb is still in my garage, can't figure out what's wrong with it. THe throttle blades won't go back to idle???

 

if the car has a return spring make sure it isnt broken.. are you runnin a carb? tpi? tbi? check the throttle on whatever you have with your fingers and see if it sticks.. it could be a kink or something in your throttle cable as well.. i had that problem with mine.. it stuck a few times then snapped in half while i was driving... third gens sure do have a lotta ****ty parts.

 

Hey guys I have been driving my moms caddy since last night so "my baby" is in the garage. I have a Q-jet and it was recently rebuilt and has given me no problems for the last month. We did not take off the carb to install the headers but I did not re-route the throttle cable. I am going to do that and then run it on the stands to see if it sticks again before I put her back on the road, I dont want a repeat and if it decides to stick it may be worse the next time. One good thing came out of it, now I have to quit pushing the nose peice swap aside. I have to put an 89 Iroc-Z front clip on, anyone have the front spoiler for that? I'll keep you guys posted on the throttle situation

i had that happen to me, its the air cleaner no sitting properly on the carb and with the vibration of the vehicle cause it to move slightly in which jams the throttle and when you stomp it a few times it returns to normal, i had this issue when i wanted to throw on a chrome air cleaner and little did i know i got the wrong one, now it will happen even with the stock air cleaner isn't sitting properly on the carb. Loosen the nut and turn it slightly and leave the nut somewhat loose (don't over tighten) you should be fine after that.

 

yeah idle has a good point.. so simple most people over look it.. i'd defently check that out... recessed air cleaners normally have a little square recessed area on either side so they can clear the throttle linkage.. if it isnt lined up properly your throttle can get stuck.. if ya have any hood room just throw a 1 inch air cleaner spacer if thats ur problem
