cam for a basically stock 86' LB9

cam for a basically stock 86' LB9
I am planning and swapping a cam into my 86' that has the LB9, well would an lt1 cam work? I have heard something about lifters. That the lt1 uses roller lifters, and that my 86 doesn't have them. What would be a good cam to go for in an 86.

Your motor has a flat tappet hydraulic cam. If you wanted to swap
in a Factory LT-1 cam you would have to get some "retro fit hyd roller lifters" as this is a hyd roller cam.
Swapping in bigger cams in themselves are poor "power adders"
Cams work much better when used in addition to other mods
that increase airflow. Like headers, intake manifolds head swap or porting etc. Increased compression works well too. (within limits)
305's are short on low end torque and a larger cam will reduce low end torque even further. A high stall converter and higher rear gear is recommended , as a larger cam will move the torque
curve further up the rpm range. This results in a horsepower gain but usually at the expence of low end torque.
I would pass on a hyd roller swap and put the difference in $'s
into headers and head/ manifold porting. Then I would select a new hyd flat tappet cam with 196 to 206 deg at .050" duration and .400/.440" lift.
Many of the cam manufacturers' have telephone and online/ email tech lines to assist you in getting the best cam for your car.

ok, the heads are going to be sent to be ported and there will be a new intake manifold and possibly headers in the near future. The car originally had 2.73's but we swapped them for 3.23's and later on a set of 3.42s. So you say about a .400 / .440 lift and 196 / 206 deg.

That's not very much cam, hardly anything over stock.
I've got 216/228, .454/.480, 112 (Crane Summit p/n CRN-113942 - flat-tappet, BTW) in a computer-controlled, emissions-legal setup. It idles at 500 in D, powers easily to 5500. Cruises at 1900 RPM at 65 mph up hills (overdrive with TCC locked) with ease. The higher stall is very helpful, but that doesn't mean it's "low torque".
I'd certainly recommend more cam.
