Smog Pump Removal
Smog Pump Removal
For anyone who has not done this yet but is thinking about it, DO IT. I was able to peel out for the first time (besides a chirp) in Overdrive. I usually had to shift it down to 1st gear to peel worth a damn. Sounds weird I know, I have the 700-R4.
I'm only 17, I used the tech article on this site to give me a sketchy guide... Hardest part of this mod was 'wiggling' the smog pump out from the engine.
Any HP gain estimates? I notice its a little more peppy, but hey I needed to change the belt anyway. Great mod, especially if you're like me and installed a high flow cat w/o AIR.

Did you install the high flow cat in place of an old plugged cat at the same time as you removed your smog pump? There may be you gain.

Usually measures about 1-2 HP gain at most, sometimes it measures a loss.

No, highflow cat was installed a few months ago, I just ripped out the metal tubing going to it from the pump, but left it blowing air into the engine. I finally got around to taking the pump out.

In a computer-controlled system, it sometimes affects what the computer sees as far as exhaust gas composition... can cause it to pull out fuel or timing or both. In a non-computer-controlled car, it's worth a HP or 2 at best, plus the shedding the couple of pounds. Of all the emissions devices on most cars, its removal has among the least impact on engine output.
I'd be inclined to suspect that something else was responsible for any noticeable performance gains. There's lots of people with essentially back-to-back time slips that show no difference in times.
The main reason people seem to want to do that to their cars is to reduce perceived clutter under the hood. But in this day and time, with the ever-increasing likelihood of emissions inspections in places that don't yet have them, it's wise to do it in a way that it can be put back when needed. I moved to California, for example; you have no idea how glad I was when I got there and had to license my car, that I had preserved every single piece of my car intact that I had ever disturbed, because they sure weren't going to give me a license plate without it all being there and working to factory spec.

I know that, and you know that; I also know that a significant contributing factor to the decline and decay of the Western Roman Empire was a mini-Ice Age starting in the late 3rd century AD that made the high passes over the Alps impassible for all but a couple of months of the year, rendering communications and travel impossible between Italy and Northern Europe; and I also know that we're in a long-term warming trend right now that's been going on for hundreds of years, for example, the last time the canals of the Netherlands froze over was in the 1600s (popular Christmas card conceptions about people skating on them notwithstanding). But reality rarely interferes with laws, whereas laws definitely interfere with people like us doing whatever we want to. I also used to live in Southern California, and had to drive occasionally in the LA area when the air was so thick it was hard to read the expressway signs, and I know how much money (Hollywood) the Sierra Club and others of like mind have behind them when they want to tell us what we can and can't drive. So, having been there and done that, and actually got to drive my car while I lived in such a place, I can tell you that I'm glad I was sensible about sodomizing parts of my car just because I didn't happen to like them.

Inspections here in OK have been done away with. A lot of other states are heading that direction. Don't let the liberals fool ya, the temp has only changed .5 degrees in the last 50 years according to the Farmer's almanac. Besides, last time I looked an ICE age is a bad thing.

:lala: I'm not worried at all about global warming and massive rains and floods. Up until December, Florida was in a massive drought. Last time I checked rain=good.

Could you post pics and supply details on how and what parts to remove when eliminating the AIR pump.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
When i removed my air system (note: i also removed my A/C at the same time) i noticed that i got an almost 60 extra miles out of a tank of gas.
plus i am on a mission to remove all my engine clutter
to answer you question i removed the air pump, and the metal tube and thing it connects to with the 2 plugs, i have headers so the lines to where the manifolds would be got chucked. i hollowed out the converter and reoved the tube going from there into the engine compartment. i taped the wires up with electrical tape and tucked them under the A/C delete pulley in case MN ever brings back emissions testing.

it's working nicely, might i add. I'm doing your integrated washer fluid/coolant bottle mod tomorrow. i painted my fenders, and i just can't bear to cover them up now.
so i snagged an integrated bottle out of an 89 grand marquis. wish me luck. i also grabbed the lines, too. did you use the ford washer pump/motor thingy in your explorer bottle, or did you use the t/a's motor/pump thingy?

I really think the horsepower gain would be under 1 hp. I've removed smog pumps on thirdgens and a few other types of cars and i never noticed any sort of power gain or added fuel efficiency. The only positive thing i've noticed is there's slightly less accesory noise under the hood. The only reason i will remove a smog pump is because they're not functioning properly and i'm too cheap to repair the system, so i'll just yank it out. There's no emissions testing in my area, so i'm not too concerned with that (and i'm not terrible opposed to another ice age).

I didn't see a need to keep mine. I'm trying to pass emissions without it, and so far, it's working. I'm not using an extremely radical setup, and I'm retaining the cats. we'll see what happens though.

Couldn't you just buy a fourthgen v8 smog pump and throw it on? Its not turned by the belt and is electricly powered. Dunno just an idea.

Many of us liberals are more concerned about air quality (try being a runner in an area with freeways for a few weeks) than global warming. I try to keep my car running cleanly/ efficiently; if you don't, well, at least you are far away from california...
While working on my firebird, I disconnected one of the air hoses to see if it affected my 02 sensor reading. I noticed a smoother idle and more power, and my 02 sensor recorded richer values. It lasted about a day before the computer compensated for the values, and I was back to normal. In the end, no gain.
I concluded that the air solenoid had stopped functioning, at least partially, and so air was entering my exhaust when it shouldn't, and changing the 02 reading. Aside from cleaning up the engine bay, removing a functioning air system doesn't make power, but from what I've read it causes the catalytic converter to function poorly, making it clog sooner.
I don't mean to flame you, but before people are encouraged to remove things that potentially help the air we breathe, can I see more proof that removing a properly functioning system actually helps?
