Guys, I need some info/have some questions about vortec heads
hey guys. I have decided to go the vortec head route and need some info. I am gonna start looking around for a good used set and was wondering if any casting are better than others and if so, what years/models should I look for them in?
Will the SD manifold work with any vortec head or with only specific castings? Sorry for all the questions. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

There are 2 casting. One(the kind of I have)Is the 906 casting. It is the lesser preffered of the two.Something to do with the exhaust valve shrouding or something like.(not really sure don't take my word for it)I got them off a 96 tahoe.
As far as the intake.Any intake designed for vortec heads will work on either of the two castings.

There are two L-31 350 vortec castings.
They end in 062 and 906.
The 062's have flame hardened exhaust seat.
Some of the 906 castings have pressed in steel exhaust valve seats. The seat will have a ridge just under the valve seat.
This is where the cast metal is machined to accept the seat insert. Just smooth and blend this ridge away with a die grinder and you'll be good to go. You can polish the whole exhaust port to good effect if you want.
There are 305 vortec versions. These are not exactly the same.
They have a L-98 shaped combustion chamber and smaller valves then the 350 heads. But use the vortec specific manifolds.
Look for the 062's and 906's...
