Im planning on polishing the chambers, and bowl work on a set of 305 heads to become more familiar with porting, and wanted to know if i should have the heads hot tanked first before porting and polishing

 

If you're just practicing, no. Just clean them as best you can.

If you are planning on using the heads, yes. You might also want to have them checked for cracks before investing all that time on heads that you'll be bolting on.

 

I do plan on using them on a 305 engine. so i should take them to my machine shop and have them tanked ?

Yes. You can actually see what you're doing, and you don't have to breathe near as much soot.
