oil pump or switch bad?

After I change my oil and turn my car on there is no oil pressure for a few seconds and the ses light comes on. I have pulled a code 54 before. Also, when cranking in the cold, there is no/little pressure for a few seconds, then it builds, then the engine will start to want to start. Also, I seem to hear it turn on. Just before the pressure builds I hear this wierd noise like the pump begins pumping.
I don't have a cold start injector so it takes a lot of cranking to start it cold.
Also, could a sudden drop in oil pressure cause the car to stall? Under sudden deceleration my car stalls and sometimes when I go to restart it won't, very little oil pressure registers. I think the engine floods though and the pump probably isn't causing it.
Please help.

Thanks

Matt

oil pressure

put a known good mechanical pressure guage on where the guage sensor screws into the engine. Dont rely on the unreliable dash guage. If the presuure is low it could be few things wrong bad bearings bad pump. Wrong oil. Gas in the oil. Pickup fell off the pump just to name a few

normal--the pump is driven by the engine and must be running at normal idle speed to show 'normal' pressure.

Also, when cranking in the cold, there is no/little pressure for a few seconds, then it builds, then the engine will start to want to start.
normal, for the same reason, plus the oil is cold and thicker and the guage may be slower to move.

Also, I seem to hear it turn on. Just before the pressure builds I hear this wierd noise like the pump begins pumping.
The pump doesn't really just turn on--when the engine turns the pump turns.

I don't have a cold start injector so it takes a lot of cranking to start it cold.
Also, could a sudden drop in oil pressure cause the car to stall?
Probably the other way around, the car starts to stall(engine slows way down) and the pressure drops.

Under sudden deceleration my car stalls and sometimes when I go to restart it won't, very little oil pressure registers.
normal--once again, the engine needs to be running to show 'normal' pressure.

I think the engine floods though and the pump probably isn't causing it.

Oil pressure probably isn't causing your driveability problems. Look elsewhere to get it running right. If you are still concerned you don't have enough oil pressure, get a real guage--10 psi per 1000 rpm is plenty of pressure.

The sound I hear is similiar to the power steering moan. What weight oil is best for cold weather?

Thanks,
Matt
