Vacuum Canister

Can someone tell me what the function of the vacuum canister and why it is used? Does it affect emmissions? A/F ratio?

it's a reserve or supply of vacuum for engines that don't make a lot of vacuum, or a supply of vacuum for something that uses a lot of vacuum.
