possible performance

hi,im looking to buy an engine for my t/a,i want a v8 350 past 87 engine, what are my options?

i am planning on a 270h cam(224,224 at .050",.470,.470 lift),
hedders, true dual 2.5" exhaust with a crossover pipe and a set of 40 series flowmaster mufflers.the induction will consist either of a performer rpm or a performer with a 1 inch spacer,a holley 750 and a custom made ram air system.with the worst head on a production 350(or in other words being negative)what is the performance i should expect from it?,what is the compression ratio on 3rd gen 350´s?do you recommend a better combo,my rear end is a 3.23 and the tranny is a 700-r4,my car weights 3700 lbs with me inside,.what performance should i expect

im thinking about cherry bomb glasspacks for now, what do you say about them?.

thanks for all,Paul.

glass packs

Stay away from the glass packs they are too restrictive.

TA Guy,

Welcome Aboard!

The '87-later 350s should have a static compression ratio of 9.3:1 or better, depending upon the model.

The 3.23 rear gearing is a good compromose ratio. Better than a 2.73 or 2.77 for acceleration, better than a 3.43 for mileage and wear. The right torque converter can make up for a lot of the difference and still deliver good mileage.

The glass packs are less restrictive than a baffled muffler, but the chambered types (like the Flowmasters) are less restrictive yet.

If you know that you are starting with weak head castings, you obviously have a lot of potential for more power in the heads. Even some careful home porting work can open up the flows on some stock castings.

i was thinking about the cam,is it a good option?would i be better with a 280h(230,230 at .050",.480.480)with rhoads variable duration lifters and a set of 1.6 ratio rockers?

what is the max lift a set of stock springs can handle?

i kno i ask a lot of thinks but i´m new to this.

thanks again,Paul

It isn't as much a lift limit as an acceleration rate issue. Given the mass of the valves and valve train, and the degree of ramp of the cam profile, stock springs will start to fail to control the valve (and allow valve float) at as little as 4,500 RPM witrh even a stock cam grind. You cannot expect the soft, low spring rate stock valve springs to do any better with an aftermarket cam, which is likely to have even more ramp and a higher valve acceleration rate. They will float at an even lower RPM.

i was told to install new performance springs along with the cam.

any aprox. hp/tq numbers on the combo with the l98 heads and is there a lot of diference if i install a set of heads from a 305 tpi?

what can i expect from the combo?15´s,14´s,13,12´s(just in my dreams with this combo)?

thanks,Paul

p.s. are tbi heads good or ?
