Power steering pump broken ?
Power steering pump broken ?
Hi,
first, sorry for my bad english, but iīm from germany, an the mechanics there donīt know anything about this camaro.
Iīve got an Camaro RS V6, 189cui.
My Problem is my power-steering; after an "burnout-session" (Donutīs...
) with also fully turned steering wheel. since that, my power steering does not work correctly
.
with higher rpmīs (over 1800 rpmīs), she works very alright. with lower rpmīs itīs not function it any longer.
The power steering fluid is full. It doesnt leak.
Would I be correct by saying the power steering pump is broke?
...and is this easy to change ?
(servo-pump with storage vessel kosts about 90,-)

They are not hard to replace. See if you can find a manual online somwhere. I prefer Chiltons manuals. I you can't its pretty simple to change, more so if it comes with the resivour-sp? Just remove the hoses from the pump, remove the belt or belts, and unbolt it. Bolt the new one on, and re-install the belts and hoses. Fill it up to the full mark and turn the wheel all the way to each side about 20 times with the car off. Check the fluid and fill it back up to the full mark. Then start the car and turn the wheel another 20 times. Top off the fluid and your done. Good luck!
Finesse,
I'm sorry for my bad english, but I'm from the US.
There are only two hose connections to the pump and four fasteners holding the pump in place. They are easy to replace, but it will take a little time.
The steering assist system is simple, and the gearbox is very rugged. It is likely that you only damaged the pump, and a replacement should solve the problem. My guess is that the higher RPM did some damage to the vanes in the pump. The pump would be making maximum pressure when the steering wheel was held against the stop, and the higher pressure might have been too much for it. The pumps will normally withstand that kind of use unless they are already worn.
These pumps are very common in the US, both new and rebuilt. The rebuilt pumps are selling for around $62US (58EUR / 114 DM) and are readily available. That includes a $15 (30DM) core charge that is refunded when the old pump is returned.
