87 iroc

hey im buyin an 87 iroc for 200 bucks off a guy i know.. it has no engine or trans but has a nice leather interior - the drivers seat and its all out of the car.. sounds like a good deal for the price though.. bodys perfectly straight no stress cracks... didnt check out the rear or the brakes cause it was in the dark and its cold as hell here.. did 87 have a 1le option? how common was it on irocs? also how common is the 9 bolt on the 87?

The 9 bolt was only in the 5.7L IROCs. If it had a 305 or a manual transmission then it will have a 10 bolt.

1LE is not an IROC

It must have been a little different in '86. The only TPI engine offered was a 305, and it frequently came with a Borg axle behind it. Mine did. Either way, it's easy enough to check. Just kneel down in the snow and start counting bolts. Borg axles aslo have a rubber fill plug in the rear cover, making them easier to identify.

A little off the subject. Thougth I read in a Motor Trend back in 1990 that there were a couple 1LE IROCs made that year. But there are no 1LE 1987's made.

This is History/Restoration Board stuff.

There was no 1LE in 87, they started in 88. There were 1LE IROC-Z's 88-90 though. The 9 Bolt started in 87 on Camaros (they started 1 year before in Trans Ams which is why Vader has it) and only standard on 350 TPI's. The rims are 16" if they are the stock IROC's.

A 5.7L IROC will have 16" rims. The 5.0L IROC still had 15".

An 87 5.7L IROC which will also have the 700R4 tranny will have a 9 bolt with 3.27 gears and rear disk brakes. It will have 16" rims and a quick ratio steering box.

All IROC-Z's from 85-87 had 16" rims regardless of the engine. 88-90, 15" IROC rims were standard and in 88 it was the regular Z28 rims. 89-90, the 2nd style rims were made in 15" instead of using the Z28's.

This is kinda funny so i'll add a little input. I have an 87 iroc with a 305 tpi, 5speed manual with a 9 bolt rear end and 16" rims. And i know this is all the right stuff from factory, checked all the rpo codes had the engine block number run and so on and so on.

you know what, if you really want to know some stuff about irocs go to www.iroc-z.com

Then you have G92 and 3.45 gears. IROC-Z.com has some misinformation BTW, our Tech Data is better.

That's exactly right, and those gears are some expensive little buggers. At least when i bought them. That was before that guy that comes on this site started selling them, well, or before i knew about him. Cost me somewhere in the high 300's, don't remember the exact cost, for just the ring and pinion, from strange eng. . I ended up getting the 3.70 ratio ring and pinion, instead of the factory 3.45, like it says in the sig.

I thought this thread was funny because a guy at an auto parts store use to tell me they didn't make an 305 iroc, i told him i have all the original owners manuals and little booklets. And he wouldn't talk to me after that anymore, guy thought he knew it all.

oh and i mentioned iroc-z.com because they give quite a bit of info that would allow one to differentiate between the different year irocs that's all

I was under the impression that the BW 9 Bolt was available in 1985, cause I got one with mine. It's all original, and the RPO says that its the 3.27:1 and it's got 9 bolts....

I just wanted to agree with the 16" wheels. I drove my 87 IROC-Z with 305/tpi/5 spd. new off the show room floor with 16" wheels.

the borg warner started i believe it was in 84 in the pontiac's and 87 in the chevrolet's with the exception of the 50 5.7 86's. from 87 up all g92 equipped 5.0 m5 cars got the 9 bolt as well as all 5.7's until 1990. there was no 1LE package in 87 though, that is correct.
