is there such a thing as good, cheap heads?
is there such a thing as good, cheap heads?
i want to go ahead and knock heads off of my "to buy" list, i would also like to still have money for other things on the list. im looking to spend about 5-600. i am considering the pro lightnings, but i want all of my options before i decide. are there any other good cheap heads that i should consider?

I've heard good things about the Corvette L98 heads, which are aluminum, but have not tried them myself.

This is the stepping stone to where it all happens right here. It should be what your engine is designed around. Having them in your hands assures you won't buy the wrong things before your ready.
The very best advise I could give you would be to take all the knowledge you can gather. Get every book you can read, The Chevy powerbook, John Lingenfelter's book.. There is a lot of books on what would be making fuel and air flow to work for you. Use the knowledge you gain to make a desicion on your own.
The only real advice I could offer would be if you end up with a cast Iron head, consider what you read about large chamber heads. Look at what they have to say about schrowding. 76 cc's chambers with big valves ect... In my opinion on a TPI with good port work and the high port volocity that tpi has to offer they work unbelievably well. The use of a small dome piston should be done though... But make your own decisions.
Aluminum heads, Consider you can go up a compression point. They are lighter by 50 lbs, The aluminum also disapates heat better so it allows for more air flow and the aluminum is easy to modify the port and valve pocket area's.
Read, use this site and gather info.. To answer the question .. AFR's are nice heads but most aftermarket are. How you intend to use them and what will you spend is a big factor too..
If you recieve advise and then go looking around for it in a book and it's not there then it's probley not the hot ticket.
