Transmission issue
Transmission issue
My transmission is doing a weird shift through 2nd. I shifted it manually to check all the gears and theyre all fine. But if it shifts automatically sometimes it will go through first and when it hits second it just kind of stays at the same rev for a little while. and pushs through second. Then it hits third and its fine. IT gets some power out of second but not much. I was going to change the filter and fluid. Im pretty sure its not hard to change the filter right? Could someone descride the process? Thanks.

Warm the trans with a short drive.
Loosen the trans pan bolts but don't remove.
Next remove several of the bolts for where you're going to want the fluid to drain. You want it to drain on the left, right, whatever you decide, remove them.
Work the pan loose. You can use a screwdriver to pry just be careful not to gouge the gasket mating surfaces.
The fluid will drain once you've broken the pan free from the gasket.
Start loosening the rest of the bolts more. Each one you loosen more will drop the pan lower causing more fluid to drain. The slower you go the less messy this job can be.
Once you have the pan down, remove the filter. There should also be a rubber sleeve that goes around the filter neck. Make sure you remove that as well.
Clean all gasket material from the surfaces. Also clean everything out of the pan. There should be a magnet in the pan that needs to be cleaned as well.
Don't use gasket makers on the trans pan. Put everything back together tightening the pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern. IIRC the torque spec is 120 in-lbs.
You'll probably spend the next 30 minutes just bringing the level back up.
Start by dumping in 2-3 quarts of trans fluid. Start the car. Check the level. You don't want to overfill.
Take it for a short drive. Bring the car back, leave it running, and check the level again. When I do trans fillups I put in .5 quart at a time unless the fluid's not even on the dipstick. In that case I put in a full quart.
Just keep doing this until your level is no higher than the full mark on your trans dipstick. (driving between each fluid addition)
Seems that just changing the filter takes care of a lot of tranny problems.
