head question
a guy at work is trying to sell me a set of 300 horse heads, thats what he calls them. what exactly are they? has anyone ever heard of 283 powerpacks? another guy has a set of them, but i have never heard of either. im looking for a cheap set for my 82 s-10. thanks
They're essentially 'Camel Hump' heads from the sixties. Obviously if they are 283 power pack heads, they probably date back to pre-62. They're not terrible heads if they have had their seats hardened and the castings have been checked for cracks.

Get the casting numbers.
Many of the old chevy small block heads (pre '69)
do not have accessory bolt holes in the ends of the heads.
This makes these pre '69 heads difficult to use on any motor with '69+ front motor acessories and brackets.

And they lack the adaptations to combustion chamber design for today's watered-down cat-pee gasoline, and so have a strong tendency to detonate.
Get casting numbers. People sling around BS like that about heads all the time, and the only way to cut to the chase is with the casting number. It does not lie. People who would say that will also offer a set of 624 or 882 or some other smog garbage, and tell you "they're almost as good as 300 horse heads". Do not walk, run away when you hear stuff like that.
But it's not impossible that he has a set of 292s and doesn't know what they are. The only way to be sure, is to get the casting number.
