Can I cut the compressor belt?
Can I cut the compressor belt?
Hey all,
Couldn't find a direct answer for my question w/ a search (most was about deleting A/C)
I have a '87 IROC with 305 TPI engine with V-belts.
The A/C compressor is shot, so the compressor clutch just cycles on & off every second (no system pressure) and I think that the clutch or compressor bearings are going out and I don't want to throw the belt. Don't have the money to get the compressor replaced.
Can I just cut this belt and not worry about it anymore? Do I need to disconnect the electrical harness from the compressor so the clutch doesn't cycle if I use defrost, bi-level, etc? Do I need to pull any fuses, etc.?
I think I can cut the belt w/o any engine problems, but I wanted to make sure I didn't have to disconnect anything else.
I want to leave the whole system in the car (maybe get it all fixed someday); I just think I need to disconnect the compressor before it seizes.
Thanks!
Brian
