Another cam recommendation for a 305 thread!
Another cam recommendation for a 305 thread!
Already used the search button and couldn't find anything. Thought about alot of things over the last few days. Building up a junkyard 350, etc. This is what I want for my 305:
S/R Torquer Heads
Edelbrock Performer Intake with EGR
Rochester Quadrajet (E4ME, I guess!)
But what cam should I go with? Anything I should know about regarding the heads about emissions? I have a couple goals. Have to re-connect emissions equipment and want/need some power from my 305. Also thought about going the Vortec route. Which would you go?
Thanks,
Brandon

See sig. The cam is the Crane computer-compatible, biggest/baddest flat-tappet one listed in the Summit catalog.
The S/R Torquer heads really need some porting work, particularly the bowl area (often referred to as pocket porting or bowl work). The guides stick into the ports quite a bit, too. Can't hurt to gasket match, either. Shucks, might as well do the full Standard Abrasives stuff (I emailed World about my plans, they said the SA do-it-yourself guidelines are good). You should probably consider upgrading the valve springs, too.
A higher stall torque converter (if you have an auto tranny) should be considered.
I'd also recommend the Weiand Action+ EGR or the GMPP q-jet manifold over the Performer. Headers a very good idea, too.
Love mine. Very easy to drive (wife and daughters don't even mind driving it), emissions-legal, will get up and talk to you if you ask it to.

The "which headers are best" is asked often on the exhaust forum. Regardless of brand, you want to get a set for '86-'90 TPI single-cat application. They have the best flowing potential, when put in front of cat and cat-back for same application. Edelbrock TES have been around for 3rd gens longest. SLP has argueably best overall design but you pay for it. Hooker maintains their reputation with their Super Comp shorties. Hedmans are okay, but their y-pipe doesn't seem to be the best design. Everything else has 1-1/2" primary tubes, too small for serious performance.
The Weiand and GMPP have a slightly higher RPM range. Also been hearing about quality issues with Edelbrock lately (can't vouch for that personally).

One more thing; look for headers with at least a 3/8" flange. This is important for maintaining a good seal to the exhaust ports, as 1/4" flanges have been known to warp from the heat.
Moreover, it is good to get at least 1 5/8" inside diameter primary tubing for good exhaust flow on a smallblock Chevy. 1 1/2" doesn't cut it. 1 3/4" is good, too.

What do you think the best "all out" cam would be for a 305 with a setup similar to the original poster, except with the heads off an L69 w/ 1.94/1.5 valves and the extensive port and polishing sitting bull and 88f-bird talk about? I'm not talking about driving manners. Maybe medium to low street manners, something good for the weekend night cruises, and a shot of nitrous?
