If it backfired during this episode, the power valve may have blown out. Most later carbs have a check valve to protect it from that, though.
And if you do get a replacement power valve, try to get one with elongated slots in the fuel passage stem instead of one with the series of drilled holes. A power valve is supposed to allow more fuel flow, and the little holes don't do that as well as the slots or "windows".
