Car won't keep running
I have a '91 Bird with a 305 code E TBI. My girlfriend was coming home with the car when it started to die coming off a light. I can hear the fuel pump when I first turn the key and the car turns over no problem and even tries to start every now and then but it will die right away. I checked for codes but there were none. If anyone could give me a starting point to look that would be great.
Hey your in clearwater eh? We'll have to meet up at sunshine raceway sometime after I get my clutch replaced.
I've had a problem very close to what youve got, the fuel pump works, but the car starts, putters, dies, starts, putters, dies, then comes to life never really feeling right.
A few things to check before you play musical sensors.
Check for vacuum leaks
Check to make sure the distributor isnt loose and twisting around.
When you get it idling, I know it will idle rough and hunt for idle, unplug the MAP sensor's vacuum hose. If the idle settles down, then thats an indication the MAP sensor has probably bitten it. Thats what happened to me.
Go to discount auto parts, ask for a map sensor, then just ask if you can hook it up real quick. Thats what I did, I hooked the new sensor up and my car got 120% better, and I didnt have to buy it before I tested it. MAP sensors are $32 btw.
If the O2 sensor is more than a year old, replace it.

I need to get down to sunshine, but I work over at the court house on 49th street 12 hour days both Sat & Sun
I'm going to get the car towed home here in a few minutes then I can check for leaks and such.
I can't even get the car to idle right now, she just fires up for a split second and dies, I can't even feather the gas to keep it running.
I'm just glad it sounds like the fuel pump is working, I didn't enjoy the thought of taking apart my rear end again.
I think the car is still running the original O2 sensor. The map is original also.
Thanks for the info I will start checking things out when the car hits the driveway.
