Swapping axle sbetween 3 and 4 gen cars?

Car: 87 Pontiac Trans Am GTA
Engine: tpi 355
Transmission: t56 6 speed manual
Axle/Gears: 9 bolt 3.90
Swapping axle sbetween 3 and 4 gen cars?
Does any one know if you can swap 4th gen axle shafts into a 3rd gen(84)? I know 4th are 28 spline and early 3rd are 26. Also, can you interchange ring and pinion gears from early 3rd gen carrier (7.5) to late 3rd gen/4th gen 7.625 carrier. Any factual info would be appreciated.

Right, the axles will not interchange. The gears will. All of these rears from 77 to the present use the same gears.
