timing question
timing question
ive read alot of threads on this but havent answered my questions yet.
after reading the tech article on the home page (tuning a non-cc hei) it made me want to change my mechanical advance springs and weights, but it said that you have to adjust vacuum advance down, otherwise you have way to much advance. so here is what i got.
stock HEI from checker auto
12* initial advance
i dont think the stock version vac. can is adjustable(?) so, what do i do?
should i wait to mess with springs and weights untill i get an adjustable one, or can i change springs and weights and not worry about it.
i have read that stock vac. adv. is about 10, my base is 12 and my mech would be about 24? that makes 46 total.
any help would be appreciated.

with too much vacuum adv at light part throttle cruising you will have surging and notice all the slack in your drivetrain.
as soon as you step on it vac goes away and you are just left with initial and mech adv.
as long as you dont set your initial too high you might be able to bring your mech in sooner with out limiting your vac adv.
a good range for initial and mech adv is 32-36 deg all in by 2700-3000, 45-50 deg with vac.
make sure to get a adv timing gun or timing tape or make marks on your balancer.
hope this helps

springs only change how fast mech adv comes in. you have to change the profile of the advance weights to achive more or less mech adv.
