Are you pushing the fuel pump pushrod up out of the way?

You need to push the fuel pump pushrod into the block and hold it in place while installing pump. Use an old hacksaw blade, bend the end, and slide it in to hold up the rod. Install pump and start bolts. Remove blade and tighten bolts.

i'll usually take some white lithium greas and slather the pump rod with it, so it'll slide in easy, you may wanna bump the motor around a lil bit. it may be all the way up on the eccentric on the pump cam making it harder to compress the spring, in the fuel pump. if it's the right pump. once you bump it around, like one turn, you slather it up with some white lithium so it stays up in the block you bolt it up and call it good.
