Whats the best cam i can use with my stock computer?

Hi all I have a 89 T/A with the 350 tpi engine. I called competition cams and asked the guy on the phone what the best cam for my car would be that would work with my stock computer.He gave me this part number #12-249-4, specs#dur 206/212, lift 434/444.Does this sound right?Is there a better cam that will work with my car?If i went with a better cam would i have to get a better chip?This cam doesnt sem like much of a upgrade he said i would get about 20 more hp from this cam.Any info would be appraciated

That's just the wrong cam period.... it's flat tappet, you have a roller motor, and it's too little.

Look at their 08-302-8 on this page http://www.compcams.com/catalog/082_083.html and the XR264 on this page http://www.compcams.com/catalog/058_059.html Either of those should run strong in your situation. Replace the valve springs with either one.

You need headers to get the full benefit of any cam upgrade.

Since you have a MAF sensor, you will not necessarily have to replace or reprogram the ECM PROM. The engine should run acceptably without changes. If you have an AFPR, you can adjust the WOT fuel delivery a bit more closely to the demand without reprogramming.

However, reprogramming the PROM can always squeeze a bit more out of the system, and is the more refined method of tuning across the entire RPM and throttle range.
