I would get yourself a curve kit and modify it. Your cm probably got installed 4 degrees retarded or something. If you could, the best solution is to start over by pulling that cam out and installing it properly. i don't know if it could cause bad things down the road or what, but performance wise you'll be definately hurting.
How much total timing are you able to get now?

if you aren't sure where the cam was installed and really want to know about all you can do is take it apart and look. i'd install it straight up since most aftermarket cams have some advance made in them. wouldn't hurt to degree it either.

Pretty hard to mess up where a balancer goes.
Sounds to me like your dist is one tooth of from where it belongs. It will work an any one of 8 places of course, but your plug wire routing might not work very well except when it's in the one where it belongs. You can try moving the dist back 1/8 turn and sliding the wires around the cap one position; or pull the dist and turn the oil pump rod and all that, generally line stuff up right, and put the dist back in at the exact right spot.
