Backfireing...Please help!?

My car is backfireing like a crazy banshee. Everytime I let off the gas It is so loud it shakes the car. I just added the edelbrock headers and it never did it before that. I was told that I need to advance the timing (which is stock timing) and widen the plug gap since I now have an MSD. True???? I also accidently knocked off a sensor that I think is the knock sensor on the passenger side under the header. Could this be giving my car the wrong air/fuel ratio? It kinda sounds dumb but I never am suprised by computer functions. Can anyone help me? I also in addition to breaking off the sensor, broke the plastic clip that goes into the sensor. Any idea to help get this sucker fixed? Thanks guys!

I thought so but I wasn't sure if it would cause it to backfire like it does. Thanks. Anyone else?

Running without a knock sensor is ok but you will not have ANY spart retard if tou have knock present so be careful. SHould not cause the problem...

The knock wire/connector, on the other hand, I believe must be isolated. ie, not grounded/shorting on anything or the system will run completely retarded, which will mean late combustion explosions, which could mean explosions escaping by the exhaust valves, I suppose. Check to make sure wire not grounded and ESC module is connected ok.

Wait a second. The sensor under the headers is I think the CTS sensor that turns on the fan. Or the one that tells the computer how hot the engine is. The knock sensor is way down there, right next to the starter.

you sure you dont have a vacuum leak,, backfiring may be caused by a vacuum leak,, are the headers tightened down good enough?

Yeah, I just re-torqued them. I thought it was too. You say that the sensor (small round-under the header)is not the knock sensor? I broke it of putting the dip-stick back in. I don't know how to fix it. The sensor AND the plug are broken.
