steering column help
I posted this in the Body and Interior too, just figured I'd add it here.
For a long time now, my turn signal lever has been broken. It isnt the lever itself, but the part in the column that the lever goes into. I just pulled the wheel, and the shaft has A LOT of play in it. Is this normal?
Does anybody have a diagram of the dissassembled column? Mine has cruise and steering wheel radio controls, but anything will help. I am trying to fix this so I can use my signals without turning on the brights.
Thanks,
Dave

Dave,
With the steering wheel removed, there is no preload pressure on the upper bearing for the upper steering shaft. That heavy spring that is help in place by that little round wire retaining ring loads the upper bearing and should take up all that play. If the entire upper steering column has movement (not just the upper steering shaft), than you may have to disassemble a little more and tighten the screws that hold the tilt mechanism together.
Just for reference:

It turned out that the switch arm was in the wrong place, and it was a little bent. I bent it back and put it back, and the switches work now. The wheel is still loose. The back side of the wheel is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the column. I KNOW that's not right. The wheel is so far out that the wheel lock does not work. This has always been like that, BTW.
One person suggested that the shock pins (?) were cut. ?
Anyway thanks Vader. Where do you get these diagrams, they really help.

Dave,
Congratulations! You're now the ONLY person in Chicagoland that has working turn signals. I get so frustrated that I ususally want to step up to a car at a stoplight, reach through the window, snap off the lever arm, and hand it to the operator, reminding them that they don't apparently need it anyway. "Hey, Lady. You probably should take your brand new Suxus back to the dealer - the turn signals are broken."
If the upper column bowl is loose and can be moved up, down, and side-to-side, the bolts holding the tilt joint support (Item #62) to the lower column are probably loose. You'll get to remove everything again, and more, until you can see teh four bolts holding teh joint support in place. Remove each one, apply a drop of Loctite 242, and torque them to 12-15 ft/lb.
