Pop-up headlight woes
Well, it finally happened. My headlights are finally starting to act up on me. The driver's side one will come up about an inch on it's own, but the motor will just spin after that to no avail. Sometimes the passenger side one will work, other times not.
What are the common problems with the pop-up headlights? Both motors still spin, so it's not in the wiring anywhere. Are the gears stripped out or something? That was my initial thought, but since the passenger side one works every once in a while that doesn't seem to make sense.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Scott

Scott,
LEFT MOTOR
If the actuator motor spins but the mechanism doesn't move, the most likely cause is failed gears in the motor assembly.
RIGHT MOTOR
If the motor doesn't operate at all, it is likely not getting power from the actuator relay or the master relay. It is also possible that the end switches in the motor are sticking open, or the brushes in the motor are wearing short and causing poor commutation. Make sure there is power on the motor connector before opening the assembly for repairs.
Maybe this will help.

If the motors are still turning, its the gears. Not actualy the teeth, but three small pieces of plastic underneath the driven (big round) gear. These appear to be some sort of "clutch" should the motor not stop for some reason. I replaced mine with some harder plastic I found at work. My motors have worked fine for about 4 years now. I believe that screws through the plastic gear into the aluminum backing may also work. Don't know if you have ever been inside the motors, but they are not that difficult One side is really easy, but the other side is difficult because of the brushes in the motor popping out. They are hard to get back in. If it helps, I'll try to find or draw a picture of the breakdown.
