Yes it's ok (and fun) but no, you probbaly won't see a difference.
I tried it one night in my 85, but my et/mph were basically the same, no real difference at any point on the track.
But burnouts with an open Y are killer. Try to restrain yourself from smoking them halfway down the track john force style. All that extra noise really makes you feel like your drag racin'.

btw, unless your car is moderately fast, don't do it. I was running 14.0 at the time, looking for magic 13s. It's not that fast, but at least it wasn't stock. When i dipped into the pedal it wasn't just a loud noise, cam, compression and cubes gave it authority.
Nothing worse than a super slow pig thats super loud. A stock/near stock engine really sounds like *** opened up, it doesn't have anything in it, just noise. Too ******* to be taken seriously and everybody will just laugh.

The first time I fired my new 350, it was with just the shorty headers on. I never got such a hard on in my life. My car sounded EXACTLY like a winston cup car at idle and when I blipped the throttle. It was the most radical thing I've ever heard come from my garage. I very badly want to gut my cat and run a single pipe to the back with no muffler so that I can get that sound back. I've started my car with no exhaust but with the cat in place, and it is just as quiet as with the muffler in place.
