doing an oil test...

well, everyone, i decided to put two popular lubricants to the test. my engine (LB9) is gettin pretty worn out, and sometimes you can even hear a slight tap, might be rods, might be valves, probably rods. and my oil pressure is a little bit lower then it should be (30 at cruise most the time if not a little under, idle is usually just below 30) and she smokes real good on startup. i know the smoke on startup is just those good 'ol GM valve seals, but i figured i'd put these lubes to the test to see how well they deliver on their claims. the two lubricants are Valvoline Maxlife and Lucas oil treatment. tonight i changed my oil and refilled it with 20W50 Valvoline MAXlife, and a bottle of Lucas oil treatment, as i figure this way both lubes will work together and give me the best sample of the two. well, as soon as i was done, i fired her up as i cleaned the garage. THE OIL PRESSURE STAYED DARN NEAR PEGGED EVEN AFTER SHE WAS WARM!!! it was just below the mark right below 60. that is AMAZING for my baby. so after cleaning the garage i am astonished (to say the least!) that even though she had been running for about 30 mins now, the pressure was STILL up. so i take her out for a cruise, and the WHOLE TIME (about 35 mins) her pressure NEVER dropped below 30 (at stoplights she would idle at 30 or a little higher!) and at a cruise she STAYED almost on the mark right below 60. when she was punched, she damn near pegged the gauge, something she HAS NEVER done since i had her. so far i am (OF COURSE) impressed. i will keep ya'll posted and let ya know how she does in a few weeks when the oil thins...

yeah i was about to say its probably more a function of the oil weight than anything else...

Plan on changing that oil frequently. It has a tendency to form ash pretty quickly. Not quite as bad a Pennzoil or Quaker State (same thing) but not as clean as syntheitic or even some more pure mineral oils.

Oil additives are almost never a good thing.
