Quick L69 question

Ok I tried the search button and couldn't find anything too specific. My sister just bought an 84 L69 z28. This thing runs like a dog. It has smooth acceleration and decent power below half throttle. On heavy acceleration it has absoultely no power. The previous owner installed an edelbrock 1904 Q-jet and got rid of the feeback control. The egr control solenoid is unplugged, vaccum lines are everywhere, the Ported vacuum switch on the T-stat housing is disconnected. My question is mainly would all the emission stuff disconnected cause the electronic dist to not add the correct amount of advance throughout the rpm range. I have expreience with Q-jets, and electronic distributors in TPI motors, but never messed with the carbed ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

2 Things:

A) Time for a tune-up.

B) Check to make sure the throttles open all the way when the pedal is to the floor (must be the pedal, dont check this by pulling the linkage on the carb). I know this trips people up from time to time... i have seen it happen here many times.

Also... reconnect all those loose electric connectors. They are part of what tells the computer how to adjust the carb to run properly, even the one on the t-stat housing (i think).

Cap rotor plugs wires new, and in good shape. Checked for WOT from pedal, goes all the way open, and opens secondaries. I'm gonna try basics on sunday, Timing, codes, advance etc. just wanted to see if anybody had a similar prob after getting rid of E4ME carb. I'll try to re-connect, replace anything wrong with the vacuum system/engine managment. Thanks see what happens..

The distributor in the carbed computer motors works about the same as a FI motor. So, if this thing is as hacked as you describe, there's no telling what kind of timing curve you've got, if you have any at all. It might be at the static setting permanently, depending on exactly how it's hacked; which will certainly make it slug-slow.

Either get the right carb for it, or get an entire non-computer distributor for it. I'd strongly recommend not getting a junk one, because the timng curves in them are usually pitiful; if you want a really good one, get a DUI from Performance Distributors, or else get a MSD or Accel one. If you get a decent distributor you don't really need an external box.
