Timing chain?

when my car is driving, my rpms will go to 0 and my check engine light will come back on. Then it will be cruising again fine and it will continuosly die then come back on. Well it did this for a few days then it died today and did not come back on. I tried starting it back up then it was clunking,I got it started then I was driving it again to get it to work, it backfired and died for good. I turn the key now and there is no noise at all, its dead. I dont know if its the fuel pump, timing chain, or computer. Need help.

first off its a chain! timing chain! big difference... if it was that then you usually should be able to crank it and take off the dist cap and see if the dist is turning that will distinguish if its your chain... if its not cranking at all you may want to check the starter but that wouldnt make it die out.

hope any of this helps

Yeah, I thought starter at first but that would not cause the car to run rough, die out, and then backire. So I am stuck right now, I think it would have to be the timing chain or maybe cracked distributer. Like I said though now it will not even make a noise when I turn the ignition.

try to get a ratchet and socket and turn the crank yourself! this way you'll know if your chain is broken and jammed up ! it may take some effort but really try to ceeank it manually.. if it turns then have a friend tell you if the dist is turning to figure out if its the chain!

Thanks for the help, its sitting at a shop on my navy base right now, and I have a feeling they do not know what they were doing but I had really no choice. I broke down right outside of the base where I work. I am doing some research right now on a mechanic for my area.
