Stalling

I drive an automatic '86 Z28 305 TPI- and twice now in the last 2 or 3 weeks I've stalled at stop lights. Lately the car has been starting up a little funny...sometimes I'll have to keep the key turned a good 3 seconds longer than I should, and maybe 1 out of every 7 times I start it up, it will sound like it's going to die- though it never does and after 5 or 10 seconds it's running normal. Is it likely this is connected to the stalling?
(I have a brand new 3 month old battery and 6 month old alternator in there.)

Idea's?

When you initially turn the ignition ON, and before cranking the starter, do you hear the fuel pump run for about two seconds?

If so, have you checked the fuel pressure?

Well the short answers would be yes to the fuel pump coming on on for about 2 seconds, and no to checking the fuel pressure.

I'm afraid I'm a total newbie so excuse the assinine question coming up...but could I just be filling the tank too high?

The day after I bought the car (6 months ago, give or take) the gas gauge broke. I talked to a couple mechanics about it and they told me it could cost anywhere from $300-500 to drop the tank and get in there to replace the sensor. I can't afford a $500 repair bill unless it's a must-fix situation, so I've just been living with no gas gauge. I usually push the limit on the auto-stop trigger at the pump to try and get as much in there as I can..
