The TV Cable tells the transmission how long to hold the gear, and it controls the pressure in the transmission. It makes it downshift when you floor it.

The Throttle Valve cable relays throttle position information to the governor in the transmission to help determine the oil pressure regulated by the governor, and thereby the correct RPM (accumulator pressure) to change gears in an upshift or downshift.

Some of us "old farts" used to call this a "kickdown lever", when in reality it applied additional spring pressure to the governor to hold off oil pressure further. Some older transmissions actually had a switch and solenoid to operate a spool in the transmission valve body to initiate a downshift, thus the terminology. We didn't know everything, we just THOUGHT we did...

Where is the TV cable and how do i adjust it. Also, I think my car is shifting too early. It goes into third and seems like it loses power. Then when I try to give it more gas to downshift, it won't. Does this sound like a TV cable adjustment is needed?

Thanks

GS,

Your problem could be the cable adjustment. The whole process gets fairly involved, and could end up taking all of two minutes to complete. The cable arrangement is different on every engine type, so it would help to know what engine/fuel system you have. My initial guess is that your cable is either stretched or was adjusted a little too loose.

Yep, just automatics. If you want, we just covered the readjustment procedure "too many times" in the V6 message area...
