pinion shim.... wtf?

Correct me if I'm wrong but... the pinion shim goes on the pinion, then the inner bearing, so in order to get the shim on, how the hell do I get the bearing off to get the shim on

correct shim then bearing, bearing seperator and press works great, bearing seperator and a puller maybe will work too but i've never tried it that way.
