Steering colum problem.
Steering colum problem.
When i bought this car I noticed that the steering wheel was off center, and did not know why. When I drove it I realized that when I use the left turn directional it is as if the wheel is already turned to the left, because it turns off the directional with very little turn to the left. Also I noticed that I have to turn the wheel alot to get the Right turn signal to shut off. Any help with this would be great.
It sounds as if the steering wheel was removed at some time and not installed in the correct position. It's also possible that the entire column was replaced at some time, again, not on center. The turn signal cancelling cam is coupled to the steering wheel, so it depends upon the wheel being on center. You could remove and re-center the wheel.

The steering wheel itself shouldn't matter....it sounds like the shaft inside the column is off-center for some reason. If tie-rod ends have been replaced, they may not have been put back into alignment properly, resulting in the wheels being turned a bit when the steering wheel is straight, hence the steering wheel needing to be turned a bit to allow the car to track straight.
A proper alignment should take care of the problem.

One way to tell if your steering column is centered is to take off the horn button. Then look & see where the horn wire connects onto the column. If your steering is centered the tube like connector where the horn wire goes should be at about the 10 o'clock mark. That little tube is part of the canceling can that turns off your signals & it can only install at that position on your column because of the black metal sheild on top of it.That sheild has a hole for the tube to go thru & the sheild can only go on ONE way beacause it has splines that match the steering shaft & the splines are not spaced evenly.Thats how youll know if your steering column is centered. Then check your wheels & see if theyre also centered or pointed straight. The hub that is on your steering wheel also has splines that match the steering shaft. To some extent you position the steering wheel as close as possible the center(w/out the screws installed) on your hub, after it is back on your steering shaft. If it doesnt center then your tie rods/toe in is off.
