What are the best tires?
What are the best tires for Thirdgens? How are BFG Radial T/A's? I know they are the classic muscle car tire. I need new tires......255/60/15. Help me out. Thanks

I've got BFG KDWS tires on the front and VR50's (discontinued, but equivalent to the HR4's IIRC) on the back. I love them but next time I'll probably go with Radial T/A's in the back.
I've had very good results with BFG Comp TA ZR4s on other cars. They're a little noisy, and aren't the greatest in cold weather, but once the carcass gets warm they stick very nicely - probably because of the fifth nylon belt. Wet traction is respectable, and the rubber compound seems just hard enough so that wear is not a real problem. I have noticed that they seem to work better at a little higher pressure than you might expect for a comparable tire, maybe because the treads are only 5-ply and the sidewalls are only 2-ply polyester with a little nylon wrapping over the shoulders. The 6-ply Goodyear Eagles give about the same kind of feedback with a slightly more harsh ride.
Then again, a lot of what makes a "good" tire depends on what you plan to do with it. I don't have any cars set up for straight line driving. Lowered suspensions with tight front ends, low gear ratios, and thick sway bars really don't do that well on a straight line launch. I'm more tuned to slalom and canyon driving. I get all woody when I see those raod sings with squiggly lines and arrows and a big "20 MPH" warning under them. I figure they just divide the safe speed by a factor of 4-5 just for the SUVs that roll off the sides.
