rear end identity

Help me out here folks. In the local salvage yard is a 84 ( I think) Z28 HO. It has a 305 4-barrel carb. The rear is posi with alum. drums. I was wondering if there was a way to tell the ratio without pulling the cover and with no RPO codes.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Car: 87 IROC L98
Engine: 588 Alcohol BBC
Transmission: Powerglide
Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4.86
Look for an axle code on the front of the right hand tube.

In 84, a 305 f-body with 3.23 gears as standard equipment. A manual transmission had an option of 3.73. The 3.73 was also standard in the HO with manual transmission.

If the car is an automatic then it could be 3.08 or 3.23 and the HO came with 3.42.
