Rebuilding an engine...

I'm thinking... JUST thinking of doing a engine overhaul by myself. Well, not by myself, with my brother... anyways, here goes my question:

HOW HARD is it? How hard is to do a total engine overhaul? You know, getting a bare block and building it from top to bottom. I would get some books on Overhauls and give it a try.

Oh yeah, I've NEVER done this

So, would you recommend I do it or should I just send it to a shop and PAY somebody to do it? It would be really fun to try but it would suck if I **** it up. What do you think? Any tips?

not really hard to do, but requires some special tools and understanding of where and how the clearances are measured. you can learn a lot by taking a engine apart. be better to watch someone build one, but if you're careful and have the manuals you can do it.

If you want to become a gear head. I'd say go for it!
If you follow a good service manual and ask alot of questions, you can do this and save alot of money.
But be prepared for some frustration and once you figure how long it will take, multiply that by two or three.
If you have an experienced mechanic and hobbiest close by that you can ask for advice that would be a big plus.
Lastly, before you start this process ask this board for lessons learned. I know I have learned many over the years.
Good luck!!
