Vortecs or Sportsman 2??
Hey guys I have been trying to decide weather to get rims, build up a rear i have with a new posi and some 3:73's or get a nice set of heads caus emy valve guides are bad. Well I had my mind set on Vortecs but by the time I buy the new intake and getthe ones that can take high lift I will have about 1000 in the heads. So I was lookignat the world products Sportsman 2 heads. there $409 a peice assembled witch isn;t bad at all. So my question is, What head is better?? thanks guys
I think if you compare numbers under .500 in. lift, the vortec outflows the sportman IIs. Since your cam is under that lift I think the vortecs will produce more power out of the box for your application.
I've seen a bunch of dyno comparisons from upgrading from stock older production heads to the vortecs, but not dyno numbers from the vortecs to the comparable priced aftermarket iron heads. It would be nice to see some articles like that from the mags. Or maybe if there are some, someone can post a link.

In "out of the box" form the vortecs will out flow and out perform the Sportsman II head even with its smaller port and valves.
Both heads can be improved with porting.
The Sportsmans can flow over 300cfm at very high lift with professional porting. 260cfm is easily achieved at home by semi ameteurs like U and me.
If I were you and money was an issue, I would remove my S/R's
and send them out for a complete *Professional rework* with 2.02 x1.60valves. They are good castings and really respond to a good porting. And they will have torque and throttle response like a vortec once reworked. They'll flow plenty (250+cfm) and make tons of power on a 360ci motor. Port size will be about 175cc when done.
Have them milled to reduce the chamber size to get your compression ratio where it should be too. (62/64cc)
they're 67+cc now.
Do your heads up right and they will outperform both stock vortecs and out of the box Sportsmans.
Should cost you less too all said and done.
Then I'd step up the cam to a Comp XE284H-10.
Both the Sportsman and S/R's were meant to be ported.
The out of the box performance is modest compared to what they are capable when fully prepared.
